All Inclusive Back Country Horseback Riding At Tumbling River Ranch

Horseback Riding

Tumbling River’s unique location in the midst of Pike National Forest provides us with millions of acres of extraordinary scenery—if scenic vistas are your thing, you’ll never tire of our horseback riding offerings. We send out trail rides every day of the week except Sundays, ranging from short and fast to long and slow. In all cases, we provide experienced, knowledgeable wranglers to accompany and assist you.

Orientation Clinics

To start the week, our wranglers offer a basic riding orientation program in the arena, where guests can get to know their horses and acquire some essential horseback know-how. We will have selected a horse to suit your experience, and, if you like the choice, you can keep that one for all of your riding. The clinics are also the time when we will adjust your saddle and other tack, ensuring your comfort and safety for the duration of your stay with us. After your clinic, enjoy a short ride into the mountains–a perfect introduction to riding at 9,200 feet.

Guests may have as much instruction as they feel is necessary throughout the week; the wrangling team enjoys spending time in the arena with interested guests.

Trail Rides

The trails here at Tumbling River range from short to long, from beginner to advanced. Each day, guided rides are offered in the morning and afternoon. Some of our longer rides will stop for a picnic lunch in a wildflower-covered alpine meadow, or atop one of the local peaks, just above timberline. The shorter riding options will get you back to the ranch just in time for lunch or dinner. Whether you’re a trail boss or a greenhorn, our riding won’t disappoint.

Overnight Pack Trip

After a couple of days have gone by and you’ve got some horseback experience under your belt, we encourage you to join us on one of our all-day rides—perhaps by Thursday, you’ll join us on an overnight pack trip. We are one of the few ranches that can get guests up into the backcountry (up to 12,200 feet!), where you may not see another person all day. Our special-use permits authorize us to ride in Pike National Forest, allowing our trips to get off the beaten path and see little-known treasures like Geneva City, an 1880s ghost town. If you do join us on our overnight trip, rest assured: we’ll provide sleeping bags, lean-tos, great food and famous Western hospitality. You just bring yourself and a sense of adventure!

On Saturday, it’s rodeo time. Everyone has the chance to compete in a variety of events, including barrel racing, pole bending, and more. It’s great fun to see folks who, a week before, had never been on a horse, proudly wearing a blue ribbon on Saturday night. No need to worry about the competition, either—you’ll have plenty of time to practice throughout the week.

Helmet Policy

To address questions concerning the use of helmets for riding at Tumbling River, please read the following:

  • We do recommend the use of helmets, especially for children; however, it is your personal choice.
  • If you do choose to wear a helmet, you will need to provide your own, as we do not have helmets to rent or loan. Many guests do bring bike helmets or ski helmets if they do not already own a horseback riding helmet – this is at your discretion.
  • We strongly suggest you receive instructions for properly fitting a helmet from the store or dealer who sold it to you. Any helmet that is not adjusted correctly is ineffective.

You can contact us directly at: 303-838-5981.  Please mention "Finest Luxury Vacations" when you call us.

Be sure to take advantage of all the fun and activities our Ranch has available for Kids and Adults!

Every day (in addition to horseback riding, of course) a wide selection of activities is offered. The hardest thing you’ll have to do all week is choose!

  • Fishing: fantastic opportunities for fly fishing on blue ribbon waters! We also have two stocked trout ponds.
  • Hiking: spectacular views and gorgeous wildflowers on hikes that vary from short to long and easy to difficult.
  • Food & Wine: we take food seriously at Tumbling River. You won’t go home hungry!
  • Trap Shooting: experience a tradition of the American West, whether it’s trap shooting, riflery, or archery.
  • Music & Entertainment: whether it’s the story songs by the campfire, or the classic country western songs at our Hootenanny, music at Tumbling River is not to be missed.
  • Square Dance: on Friday night, bring your dancing shoes and our professional caller will be sure to get your toes tapping!
  • Swimming Pool: we have a heated outdoor pool with a view that is second to none, and two amazing hot tubs, ideal for relaxing after a long day in the saddle.
  • Recreation Room: our “Pioneer Club” is located near the swimming pool. You’ll find table tennis and a foosball table there for some challenging games with your family or your new friends.
  • Yard Games: volleyball and horseshoes are available should you find yourself with a few spare moments. Be sure to check out the new bocce court (we’ll be sure to teach you if you’ve never played), play a game of soccer, or join the kids in a round of GaGa.
  • Hayride: on Monday night, hop on the hayride for a true Western experience (but watch out for bandits!).
  • Massage: we have an excellent massage therapist on staff. She can be booked throughout the week to help with those sore muscles!
  • Rodeo: every Saturday, we host a rodeo for kids and adults where everyone in the family can show off their skills.
  • Ranch Animals: in addition to the horses, you will also find goats, sheep, ducks, geese and donkeys!
  • Sightseeing and Vehicle Tours: enjoy vehicle trips to the nearby towns of Breckenridge, Fairplay, and Georgetown.
  • Rafting: we offer whitewater rafting trips down the Arkansas River every week of the summer!
  • Golf: there are public and private courses in Evergreen (45 minutes away), and in Breckenridge (about 1 hour away). We can help you make arrangements, but you will need your own transportation.

Arrive for morning activities or mid-afternoon. Depart before dinner on your check out day. What we do well is our 7 day, Sunday-to-Sunday program. However, we want to accommodate your family and help you enjoy your time at Tumbling River. We offer 3, 4 & 5 nights’ stays. Please note that if you are coming to the ranch for a partial week stay, we still operate in our weekly program and we cannot change our weekly schedule. We will do our best to help you book activities with our vendors on different days, but this would be on your own. For example, if you want to take our white-water rafting trip, which we offer on Wednesdays, but you can only take it on Thursday; we will help plan anyway that we can, but this trip would need to be done on your own. Partial stays also require guests to rent a car or find another source for transportation, as we only offer our shuttle services on Sundays.

Most importantly, we recommend that you begin your stay on Sunday. Arriving on Sunday allows your family to meet other guests and participate in our orientation on Sunday evening. In any event, your partial stay must fall within the Sunday to Sunday structure (meaning a weekend stay is not an option). Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions.
