Premier Kids Program Ranch Vacation Packages At Tumbling River

Kids Program

Tumbling River offers extensive, entertaining programs for kids ages 3-11 and teens. For those of our guests under 3 years old, nanny services and babysitting are available.

Kids Program, Ages 3-5

At Tumbling River Ranch, the summer kids program is our major focus. We are well-known as the premier kids ranch in Colorado, for good reason: we not only focus on the interests of the children, but relish the opportunity to introduce them to the Western lifestyle and Western ideas–offering the rare opportunity to “unplug” and spend some quality time . Ours is a flexible program, built both to allow families ample time together and kids to have plenty of their own adventures.

Our counselors are ready after breakfast with exciting schedules for children 3 to 5 years old, which continue through lunch and throughout the afternoon. The 3-5 group spends quality time each day with the ranch pony (hand-led pony rides are often the highlight of the trip), but that’s just the start! A typical day at Tumbling River can include arts and crafts, bonding with the animals in our Critter Pen, playing games in the Play Meadow, or reading stories in the tipi. Our counselors all have a background with children–from camp counselors to teachers–and tailor the schedule to the 3-5 group each week.

Kids Program, 6-8, 9-11

Our kids program activities are great for all ages, but certain activities are more suitable for specific age groups. In some situations, kids 6-8 years old and those 9-11 years old will separate to better accommodate each age group’s interest. Most days, however, the groups follow a similar schedule. Often, mornings will start with a kids-only trail ride, and can be followed by nature hikes, field games, arts and crafts, or geocaching. As with the 3-5 group, the schedule is tailored to the group each week, and can therefore change considerably based on the kids’ interest. Other activities include fishing, swimming, shooting, archery, rodeo practice, riding lessons, hay rides, GaGa ball (in a brand-new pit!), capture the flag, overnight camp-outs, and whatever else our counselors come up with!

The counselor team at Tumbling River is top-notch: each was chosen based on their experience with and desire to work with children. Most have an extensive background working with kids, and many return each summer–testament both to their love of the west and the quality of our programs every year. All of our counselors are CPR and First Aid trained.

Teen Program

What about teenagers? At Tumbling River, teens have the best situation of anyone–no more groaning at the thought of an attached-at-the-hip vacation with their parents or being relegated to the kids’ table while the grown-ups have all the fun. Teens at the ranch can participate in all activities, with parents or without. They can go on all of the horseback rides (including loping rides and the overnight pack trip), and can try other adventurous activities like rock climbing (on real rock, not an artificial wall), trap shooting, and fly-fishing for the first time. An added bonus: they get to hang out with fun, excited, and cool teen counselors who are typically just starting college. The teen counselors know just when to add an outdoor sports game, throw in another horse clinic, or just go to the arena with water balloons. Many ranches say that they have things to do for teens, but Tumbling River ensures that your teenagers will feel genuinely included and will more than just enjoy the activities we have for their group–the teen group is traditionally the one most likely to encourage the parents into a return stay.

Some of the teen group highlights: rock climbing (not on a wall), the teen loping brunch ride, white-water rafting, the overnight pack trip to a ghost town in the mountains, fly-fishing clinics, teen cookout, yoga, capture the flag, private arena clinics and horseback games.

Nannies and Babysitting

Tumbling River Ranch is one of the only ranches in Colorado that not only offers a nanny program, but loves babies and has lots of gear.  In fact, Scott and Megan added the program once they started a family of their own.  We want the program to work for your family, so you have a few options.  The full nanny program (8 hours a day to use as you’d like; this is a one-on-one program with our college-age nanny) is one option. If you and your family feel that you do not need the full nanny program, there is a small room and board charge for each toddler (under 3 years old). However, once you get to the ranch and find yourself enjoying the activities and wanting to get out on your own, we offer babysitting services for an additional charge.

Be sure to take advantage of all the fun and activities our Ranch has available for Kids and Adults!

Every day (in addition to horseback riding, of course) a wide selection of activities is offered. The hardest thing you’ll have to do all week is choose!

  • Fishing: fantastic opportunities for fly fishing on blue ribbon waters! We also have two stocked trout ponds.
  • Hiking: spectacular views and gorgeous wildflowers on hikes that vary from short to long and easy to difficult.
  • Food & Wine: we take food seriously at Tumbling River. You won’t go home hungry!
  • Trap Shooting: experience a tradition of the American West, whether it’s trap shooting, riflery, or archery.
  • Music & Entertainment: whether it’s the story songs by the campfire, or the classic country western songs at our Hootenanny, music at Tumbling River is not to be missed.
  • Square Dance: on Friday night, bring your dancing shoes and our professional caller will be sure to get your toes tapping!
  • Swimming Pool: we have a heated outdoor pool with a view that is second to none, and two amazing hot tubs, ideal for relaxing after a long day in the saddle.

  • Yard Games: volleyball and horseshoes are available should you find yourself with a few spare moments. Be sure to check out the new bocce court (we’ll be sure to teach you if you’ve never played), play a game of soccer, or join the kids in a round of GaGa.
  • Hayride: on Monday night, hop on the hayride for a true Western experience (but watch out for bandits!).
  • Massage: we have an excellent massage therapist on staff. She can be booked throughout the week to help with those sore muscles!
  • Rodeo: every Saturday, we host a rodeo for kids and adults where everyone in the family can show off their skills.
  • Ranch Animals: in addition to the horses, you will also find goats, sheep, ducks, geese and donkeys!
  • Sightseeing and Vehicle Tours: enjoy vehicle trips to the nearby towns of Breckenridge, Fairplay, and Georgetown.
  • Rafting: we offer whitewater rafting trips down the Arkansas River every week of the summer!
  • Golf: there are public and private courses in Evergreen (45 minutes away), and in Breckenridge (about 1 hour away). We can help you make arrangements, but you will need your own transportation.

Arrive for morning activities or mid-afternoon. Depart before dinner on your check out day. What we do well is our 7 day, Sunday-to-Sunday program. However, we want to accommodate your family and help you enjoy your time at Tumbling River. We offer 3, 4 & 5 nights’ stays. Please note that if you are coming to the ranch for a partial week stay, we still operate in our weekly program and we cannot change our weekly schedule. We will do our best to help you book activities with our vendors on different days, but this would be on your own. For example, if you want to take our white-water rafting trip, which we offer on Wednesdays, but you can only take it on Thursday; we will help plan anyway that we can, but this trip would need to be done on your own. Partial stays also require guests to rent a car or find another source for transportation, as we only offer our shuttle services on Sundays.

Most importantly, we recommend that you begin your stay on Sunday. Arriving on Sunday allows your family to meet other guests and participate in our orientation on Sunday evening. In any event, your partial stay must fall within the Sunday to Sunday structure (meaning a weekend stay is not an option). Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions.
